People always remember those who came first. The Wright brothers flew; Armstrong landed; Lindbergh crossed; Bell spoke; Edison lit; Columbus discovered – er, you get the idea. The most recent addition? InvisibleHand provides…bandwidth.

Massachusetts-based InvisibleHand Networks Inc. has pioneered the “bandwidth provider” category by being the first to offer bandwidth on demand through its “distinct bandwidth on demand service” called StreamingHand, which has reportedly cut its current customers’ costs by up to 70 percent.

InvisibleHand peddles bandwidth in a simple, sensible way: as needed. There are no long-term contracts and no monthly minimums. Using its Merkato software, InvisibleHand is able to provide bandwidth in real time and at market prices. This way, if a customer is planning a massive spike in bandwidth for a webcast the third Thursday of a given month, he doesn’t have to up his bandwidth level across the board – he just pays when needed. InvisibleHand negotiates based on the bandwidth’s market price; Merkato then monitors the usage, calculates the specific customer’s cost and bills accordingly.

It seems StreamingHand is taking the first steps of the long voyage of capturing and taming the wild bandwidth. We hope others will follow.
